Bert Rodriguez Confirmed Artist for A&V 2010

December 29, 2009

Our group is proud to announce that artist Bert Rodriguez will be a part of the 2010 A&V exhibition!

We just met with him tonight and will be meeting with him a few more times throughout the semester to coordinate everything and to get to know him. Bert was featured in the 2008 Whitney Biennial, has traveled the world, and has many interesting pieces and ideas. Check out some of his work here: http://www.minegro.com/work/09/09.html

Needless to say, we are all very excited for the exhibition and can’t wait to see everything come together!

A&V Class Venturing Into New Territories

December 11, 2009

It was decided today, by the suggestion of the A&V Alumni Advisory Board, that the class should create a formal club under the Council of Student Organizations.

I created a club two years ago and in my experience, it’s easy to create, but hard to maintain. We have several students who volunteered to be Executive Committee members, such as President, Treasurer, and CSO Representative. We also have Committee Chairs who will be members of the Executive Committee. I’m going to help draft the Constitution & Bylaws, which is oddly something I enjoy doing :)

I hope we can get this club off of it’s feet because this is a great idea and an incredible opportunity for our class to get the entire student body involved.

Last class & Mark fundraiser

December 11, 2009

Today we will be having our last A&V class for the semester, and I’m certain a lot will be covered. There is so much to do to prepare for the exhibition that I’m sure many of us will be working on one thing or another over the winter break.

For everyone who’s preparing for the holidays, one of our classmates, Jocelyn Baez, arranged a Mark fundraiser for A&V. I’m sure everyone is looking for gifts, so make sure to check out her website: http://www.mymarkstore.com/jbaez

30 – 50% of every order will be donated to A&V! And of course, your contribution to our project will be greatly appreciated :)

A&V 2010 in Pia Lindman performance at Gallery Diet

A&V 2010 Student-Curators Alexandra and Michelle Montesino with Pia Lindman

Pia Lindman performed Face Act at Gallery Diet during Art Basel Miami Beach 2009.

Pia Lindman’s performance Face Act, is part of a larger body work that Lindman developed at the Humanoid Robotics Group at M.I.T. As Lindman reads aloud lines from a Simon Rich text, Aesthetics & Values students from FIU’s Honors College will use Pia Lindman’s face as their stage; pulling, poking, and pinching her face to create the corresponding facial expression. The students collective mind interpreting the text serves as an artificial intelligence, while their fingers serve as the actuators transforming this mind into action.

The three student-curators from Aesthetics & Values 2010 are Alexandra Montesino, Michelle Montesino, and Noor Daghistani.

Noor Daghistani reads the text of the performance.

Below is the dialogue the performance responded to.

(Repost I): What do you make of the New Museum showing the collection of Greek Billionaire, Dakis Joannou? Show curated by Jeff Koons (40 wrks. in coll.) on 3 flrs. of the Mus. Is it okay, business-as-usual, gross, curatorially irresponsible?

1)
I am an artist who does take risks…inside and outside of the studio

2)
I am sure you have integrity…and I am a person who is not totally naive, and does much more than complain.

3)
I just think a little more pragmatic thinking and a little less dreamy idealism would do wonders.

4)
No museum space is devoid of $.

5)
It appears history repeats itself, again and again, so what are the lessons learned? Just like in Rome, the Pope and the anointed are in league or should I say in bed with each other!

6)
I think many artists take risks….not just me. It takes courage to be an artist

7)
Yes, you are right, pragmatic thinking is necessary…But on the other hand, I respect idealism.

8)
Why do some “artists” think that the gov’t (my taxes) should support them? The people actually work for a living should not be forced to support someone who sits around and scribbles all day and nobody wants to buy his scribbles.

9)
Artists have to prove themselves in the marketplace.” Well, OK, they said, and they did, which gave rise to the gravity warping orgy of art and money that we just went through and are trying to recover from.

10)
For the record, “artists” work for a living as well, “artists” pay taxes too, not just Joe the plumber.

11)
I don’t think that I should be REQUIRED to pay for the exhibition of a photograph of Mapplethorpe inserting a bullwhip handle up his rectum.

12)
@Edward, the late 1980s called, I’ve got Senator Helms on the line..
Yo. Your side won this fight. Let’s move on?

13)
The NEA (my tax money) has instructed artists to produce art supporting Obama and his policys Why not give the Klan money to produce art.?

14)
I think we all have courage and take risks, it is the creative soul of an artist, as simple as it sounds.

15)
Here is a link to some but not all my work, the more edgy stuff is not for this audience. Get in touch with me, if your a video/media artist.

16)
I find the work as I make it, not before I make it.

17)
Don’t you have enough faith in art to support government funding of all artists? Artists are not lazy.

18)
“Charity starts at home”

19)
I think American artists should receive 50,000 a year from taxes. Even jeff k. Why not?

20)
Why not fund all scientists? Or all doctors? Or all ditch diggers – those guys have it tough.

21)
Edward, you know perfectly well that gov’t. funding of the arts is not about giving money to pornographers and propogandists.

22)
For every bull whip in the ass there are thousands of incredibly valuable regional puppet theaters and art workshops being funded.

23)
But there is no way to keep this glut in check, especilly when the market tends to favor those here for fun fashion and profit.

24)
Times change, today is somebody’s “good old days.”

25)
who is in that collection anyway???? i have no clue. i havent seen a list. i’m not. he once bought a painting, stored it in a box somewhere for awhile, and then my gallery said he returned it or sold it back to them or something. i’m like, what the fuck do i need to see another round up of incredibly famous people for? i’d actually like to know if show will include one person i have not heard of who is great… i went to the show in venice this summer of that other famous rich dude.. i cant even remember his name, i’m blocking it out. BLECHHHH!!! it was fucking awful! even the good people in it looked bad!!!! i’m going to be bold and post this.
