Xavier Cortada will be a part of A&V 2010

November 30, 2009

I am very pleased to announce that Mr. Xavier Cortada’s art work will be on display this year at the Frost Art Museum in the A&V art show we will be curating. My team mates and I are very excited to finally have an artist who will be committing himself and his work to making our project a future success! We are also extremely relieved to have released the stress of awaiting a response!

He kindly responded back to my email stating that he’d be honored to be a part of A&V and would love to coordinate a time and place to get started once the madness of Art Basel is over!

In his e-mail, he left a link to two openings that he will be having this week and claims that we are all welcome to go. Here are the two links:

Words cannot describe how enthusiastic I am about the future of this course!

Thanksgiving Weekend Donations/Workout!

November 29, 2009

My sister and I are both in the A&V class this year and decided to join our efforts and take advantage of this ‘giving’ weekend! We had some spare time this morning and were talking about how we SHOULD go canning and raise some funds for the class, BUT how the day was so beautiful and how great it would be to workout outdoors instead. Soooo, being the creative sisters we are, we came up with a plan! haha!

We decided we would workout by running to the nearest Publix to our house (not too far) and once we got there we would stand outside and ask for donations! In the spur of the moment we put two cans in our little book bag and took off! Needless to say, by the time we got there we were as sweaty as could be, but we still did great! Apparently the gym clothes and two sweaty girls asking for money intrigued people and made many curious, we told them about the class and exhibition and whoever had extra cash was more than happy to give it to us. We were there for about an hour and made $32 dollars! Quick and painless, but very tiring in between all the running and the hot sun!

Next time we plan to hit the streets and actually go canning. We were just warming up at Publix today! :)

With A&V love,

Wendy Wischer!!

November 22, 2009

Our group got confirmation this morning from Wendy Wischer! It is ironic how a couple years ago in an ‘Honors Hour’ she was the featured guest, I attended and was completely in awe with all of her works. Who would’ve thought that a couple years later I would actually be working with her putting together and art exhibition! My group and I are very excited to begin working with her.  Can’t wait to meet her at Art Basel! Check out some of her stuff! :)

Patrick Bateman vs. Dorian Gray

November 21, 2009

After looking at the characters of Patrick Bateman and Dorian Gray, I find myself insane by society standards.  I found myself wondering “Is it just me or are these men living the life?”  Yes, of course they have their immoral  behaviors and thoughts and things of that nature, but you can’t help but think to yourself, if you could, would you be them?  If you could get away with murder, and not just murder but the most grotesque and obscene of crimes, would you? If you had the guarantee that you would never get caught, would you?  If you were able to have your wrongdoings mark a painting rather than you, what would you do?

I found myself feeling sorry for Patrick Bateman because he was so empty. he had no drive, no ambition, and essentially found pleasure in nothing. He had everything that anyone could wish for.  However, I found that his story was commenting on the ideas that were floating around in the 1980s.  He took advantage of every pleasure he could, but did not really find any satisfaction from any of them.  Once again, I could venture to say that I felt sorry for him.

Now Dorian Gray is another figure I wouldn’t mind experiencing myself.  He, unlike Patrick Bateman, is able to find enjoyment in the sensual pleasures.  However, he begins his downfall once his pursuit of pleasures begins to harm others.  His first blemish cam about when he abandoned Sibyl Vane.  Then began his path to ugliness.

What would these men say to each other?  Who would pat who on the back? Who would be disgusted with who? Would Bateman want to kill Gray? Would Gray be revolted by Bateman? Would they see themselves on one another?

Something I found that Bateman and Gray had in common was their reluctance to be something other than perfect.  Bateman hated when his girlfriend would say he could use a bit more time in the gym or when he would notice other people having something better than him, for example business cards.  Dorian began his hedonistic approach to life when he was made aware that the world was at his feet while he is beautiful, young, and vital.  Both characters took advantage of this power as much as they could because they did not want to reach the realization that they are going to grow old, ugly, and die.

Let us say that you have no faith in a “god” or a moral code… that promiscuous behavior, indulgence in sweet wines or hard liquor, exploration of hallucinogens and stimulants, and any and all things in between were not mandated by some “divine hand” as “sins,” would you admire these men? Would you want and desire this life of no consequence?  If you could be beautiful for the rest of your days and could partake in every sensation you desired… what would hold you back? What you keep you from doing so??

Really, try to exit your inhibitions and explore this thought… And if you’re beginning to scare yourself, you’re doing it right.
